Here's a great reveiw of our amps:

So, My Hot Rod DeVille came in today, was waiting for me after class. I sent it to Jim Price at Omega Amps (www.omegaamps.com) not long ago. He did his standard mod (which, for all of you that have been following his mods, is a new circuit, mine is the third he's done now with the new circuit) plus the footswitchable mid boost. So here's the break down by channel.

Clean- WOW! This channel is understated, I think by most. The more I hear it, the more I love it. Very Twin-ish. Fat, mellow, but has punchiness in reserve. It's a gorgeous tone, not as bright and harsh as the original channel. Honestly, after hearing this, I have realized, the original clean channel just wasn't as good as I initially thought. Jim really rounded this channel off. It has a great natural balance of what most look for in a clean channel: Fat, warm tone. FANTASTIC!!

Clean+MIDBOOST- All of the above with a big helping of boost! sends the clean into overdrive when the amp's close to pushing, if the clean channel were a softball, the MB clean channel is a bowling ball. If that makes ANY sense.

Yellow Drive(1st Drive Channel)- HOLY CRAP!!!! This is the most improved channel on this new circuit compared to his older ones, according to him, and the clips i've heard online. Just an amazing OD channel. Very full sounding, very rich. Smooth fat overdrive. Take a tubescreamer, make it better, rounder, and put it in your amp, haha! It gives a barky TS feel. It really is tough to put into words. But I can say it is my favorite channel!

Yellow Drive+ MIDBOOST- Like a punch in the face! You know those sounds that put lumps in your throat? THAT!! hopefully some of you know what i'm talking about. BROWN overdrive with a wonderful ability to cut through the mix. It's a TS-9, morbidly obese on steroids!!

Red Drive(2nd Drive Channel)- HELLO ROCK! take the yellow channel and overdrive it some more! Gives a Marshall Dumble lovechild feel. Very rich, but also growly at the same time!

Red Drive+ MIDBOOST- welcome to feedback HEAVEN! If your crowd were falling asleep on you, this would be the adrenaline rip to wake them up! the pure essence of ROCK!!!!

Guys, this is one GREAT sounding amp! I wish I had the ability to put some clips up. But I can say, for me, this puts the discussion of whether the mod is worth it or not to rest. Some say the amp just isn't worth modding, sell it and save up for a boutique amp. There just ins't anything that i've played on withing 1500 bucks of what i've spent on this thing that sounds as good, is as versatile, it's just THAT GOOD!

It's a tough amp to put into words without A/B'n it with similar amps. What i can truly say with confidence, is that this amp is worth 3 times what i paid for it in tone!! GET ONE!!!

Here's what other customers have to say:

Hi Jim,

I just have to tell you that the more I play this amp, the better it sounds! The "drive" channel is amazing with my Gibsons and Strat, and the "more drive" channel adds just the right rock edge. The two drive channels are kind of like what I experienced with another highly respected builder who has an amp with a "jazz" and "rock" toggle switch.

One thing I hadn't bargained on is how much better the clean channel sounds. I did an old-school blues gig a few weeks ago and plugged a Gibson semi-hollow body CS-336 straight into the clean channel, engaged the footswitchable midrange and preamp boost pedals, cranked the amp to a reasonable level for the venue, and IT SOUNDED AND FELT JUST LIKE MY OLD BLACKFACE PRO REVERB CRANKED!

So after the gig, I figured if an amp's clean channel can give up the goods so easily, what would it sound like with a choice OD pedal or two? Since then I've been experimenting with using the clean channel, preamp boost engaged only, with a Jetter Gain Stage Blue and a Gain Stage Black proto. These pedals were always the best of the best, but with your Omega modded HRDx clean channel, the Gain Stage Blue gets the closest I've ever heard to Eric Johnson's 400 lb violin tone outside of EJ himself, and the Gain Stage Black NAILS Clapton's Bluesbreaker tone from the "Beano" album.

If I wasn't so in love with the amp's on incredible OD sounds, I would have tried this months ago! I still debate taking the pedals out on my next gig, though; I love the look you get from other players when they look down and realize you're getting ALL THAT from what looks like a stock Hot Rod Deluxe!

Keep up the excellent work, Jim!

Dave

Jim -

This thing sings- awesome job! It's more than I was expecting, frankly. And this is with my stock Tele - can't wait to try my (now in the shop) custom Tele with Tom Anderson pickups. Love the headroom switch as well, exactly what I was hoping for.

Thanks for the great work. If you ever need a local D.C. reference of any sort, just let me know.

Cheers!
Patrick

WOW!!!!
This is the greatest amplifier EVER! I will be getting rid of my twin reverb RI and my Koch Multitone. I really have never heard anything sound so sweet. I can definately tell the difference in the drive channels. I can't wait to see peoples reactions. This amp sounds like it is on steroids. Just what I needed...

Jim,

My kid feels ignored, my wife is lonely, and my friends don't recognize me anymore...because I'm too busy playing this awesome amp you sent back to me!!!

Dude, you rock man! I'm serious! I would've written to you sooner, but like I said, it's hard to tear myself away from this amp. I'm impressed. I'm amazed at the "cajones" this amp now has.

Truly unbelievable tones. The OD has this thick crisp crunch that I love. That muddy congested mess that was there before the modification is gone. Hit a good solid chord on my guitar and this amp rocks it. Like a big sonic fist in my face! Clean, clear, crunchy, thick, smooth and buttery, this amp now has it thanks to you.

Another thing that I love is the amp now has a cleaner switch over between the clean and overdrive channel. No abrupt changes coming from this amp! It used to be that I stayed away from the OD channel and just stuck to the clean with a tube screamer. Not anymore. I'm all over the OD (with the nice boost from the "bright switch"...brilliant)!

It's like getting a new amp! And frankly, it is a new amp. The only thing I regret is not getting this amp to you sooner.

Jim, you're a gentleman and a tone scholar. You've brought me closer to my rock-star dream. Thank you man!

Your loyal customer,

Justin Ceniceros

P.S. You've probably got a ton of people that'll voucher for your work, but I would be honored to be among them. So if anybody's sitting on the fence about your mods, don't hesitate to send them my way. This amp is inspirational dude, and I gotta spread the message "Jim Price is where it's at!"

Jim Price at Omega Amps asked me to share with you my thoughts on the Blues Jr amp that he worked on. First let me say..... I LOVE IT! The amp was okay in stock form but it distorted too early and seemed resticted. The master volume pot did not give very good volume control and I wanted to to see if Jim could fix that while giving me a little more headroom and "opening up" the amp to give me the tone I was looking for.

Let me say that the amp that Jim returned to me was totally different than the one I shipped out! The amp has a new level of sustain and harmonics and it sounds great whether you are playing clean or in over-drive. I asked Jim to voice it a little on the clean side as I don't play a lot of high distortion music and he nailed it. The tone is full and rich and the higher volume settings give a nice distortion and great sustain like some of the expensive boutique amps. I own a Mesa Boogie Subway Reverb Rocket that I have enjoyed for several years, but this little Fender now sounds a lot better and the Boogie may begin to collect dust.

The amp sounds great with the stock speaker, but I decided to swap it out for an old JBL D123 that I had. It is a shallow full range speaker built in the 60s for special applications and not necessarily a guitar amp speaker. Well, this change made the amp sound even better. It has a lot more bass without being muddy and the top end has real sparkle. This little single 12" amp sounds like a screaming black face Fender Twin. As you can tell, I am very pleased with Jim's work and his price is very reasonable for the new level of performance that you get. Jim has also been great on following up and he has backed up his promise of making sure I was satisfied. I will recommend him without any reservations. I hope this helps and let me know if you have any questions that I can help with.

Been playing at louder volumes recently and have been finding even greater tones!!!! I love it more and more as I play it.......you were right on target about the sweet spots! I think all in all, aside from the fact that ALL 3 channels have better tone, is, my favorite is the footswitchable mid-boost!!!!! HEAVENLY!!!!!! On some chords I can whisitle three or four different harmonics....they just RING!!!!!!!

Oh, and, since I turned it up, the break-up is incredible on the clean channel....way smoother and totally dependent upon pick dynamics......soooooulful!!!!! Thanks, man...

Hello Jim,

i wanted to give you an update on my HRD amp that you had modded for me recently.
It's been a few weeks now so it's had plenty of time to sink in and the bottom line is this, you did an AWESOME job my friend.
At first i was playing it by myself, no effects, just guitar, cord and amp. The combo cabinet is loaded with 4 10" Jensen MOD series speakers (a good Celestion influenced speaker for the budget minded). The amp sounded so good on it's own that i couldn't quit playing long enough to run any effects, and i should also mention that my ears were ringing a lot as a result.

After about a week i finally got around to hooking up effects. This amp has always done a fantastic job of accepting effect pedals, i have played through a number of high $ amps that sound like crap with stuff plugged into the front end. After the mods the same still holds true, all different types of effects still sound great. Now here's the kicker - i have a Tube Screamer clone (for lack of better term) by Aramat the Green Machine that i have been very fond of. With the new mods i was kind of bummed thinking that i really didn't need it anymore, man was i wrong, this thing is now my secret weapon. I use it for a slight gritty boost with clean channel and it sounds as great as ever. And with the gain channel, LOOKOUT!
I have never had good results using a distortion pedal in conjunction with an amps overdrive channel, quite frankly it sounds awful to me, but with this amp it is INCREDIBLE! It give me a flat out smokin' drive without screwing with the amps natural tone and best of all, no residual noisy garbage. it's a really natural 4 gain stage, very impressive!

I have had a chance to use this for 2 band rehearsals so far and this thing is explosive. The notes coming out of this thing are so fat and round that it almost feels like i'm on auto pilot and the f*#k*ng thing is playing itself. I did a quick recording setup (2 mics and a cassette deck) and i like what i am hearing.

I should also mention that i have been using it so far without the mid-boost pot engaged. That feature is an absolute fire-breather. I promise next band rehearsal that switch is getting pulled to "on". It's really taking me a while to explore all of the possibilities.
I can only imagine what this amp sounded like with those special recipe tubes of yours, i can only say it sounds damn fine right now.

Again Jim, you did a tremendous job with this amp, you gave me the sounds i was looking for with a huge amount of versatility that i wasn't expecting. I can't thank you enough.
If you ever have anyone on the fence about having this done to their amp and need a reference feel free to send them my way.

Your friend and very satisfied customer,

Rich

JAMES!!!

What’s happenin’, bro? Listen man, I got my Hot Rod cleaned up and reassembled two weekends ago and finally got to spend some time with it, adjusting the controls and enjoying the sweet, beautiful tones that are now my H-Rod’s natural sound. FANTASTIC! Our praise band at church had a practice the following Monday and a performance that Wednesday, so I wheeled in my Omega Rod and she absolutely SMOKED! Everyone was thoroughly impressed, but none more than me. It’s actually FUN to fire that baby up now! I revved her up yesterday and brother, that thing sounds meaner and more gorgeous every time I play it! THANK YOU so very much!!!

All the amazing reviews and testimonials I had read on the Gear Page and in other places were true, and I’m so thankful to have discovered you when I did. My guitar playing will improve dramatically now, thanks to your beautiful work and your dedication to tuning these things up to perform at peak levels. Mr. Price, you truly are the MAN!!!

Keep in touch!

Your friend,
Kyle from Cowtown

Man, this thing is beautiful! You and Ken both have done a world-class job! I gigged with it last night, and all I can say is the drive channel is Santana/ Johnson all the way, and the clean channel has the magic of such a great feel without being too saggy or spongy. I was running it through my open-back 1x12 cab with an EV (sounded great, a little more midrange than I'm used to, but that made the drive channel like butter. I only had to think of a note to get sustain LOL). Today I ran it through a open-back 2x12 with Vintage 30's and that sounded great as well, a little more bass. But today I ran it through my old
80's Marshall 4x10 with original Celestions, and that so far is my favorite. A little more scooped so the cleans sound more like a Twin, and it addded a little top-end sheen to take the drive channel just about into "Talk To Your Daughter" territory. Man, for years my favorite lead tone was my old Marshall Mosfet Lead 100 head, because it
had a switch to disengage the tone stack (there was an additional tone knob for that reason), and that created a sort of enhanced-midrange quality that cut through a mix perfectly. Well, this head happens to gets that but better and with real tube feel and bloom and sustain, and the right amount of gain (no overdrive necessary like I had to use with the Marshall). I know I need to live with the amp and experiment for a while to really become one with it.

Once again, though, this thing is killer! you've made a beliver out of me too! Also, wondering if you might mind if I might do a little show-and-tell on thegearpage?

Thanks again!
Jimmy

Omega Amps made my favorate amp sound better. I emailed James Price at Omega inquiring if he could convert a 5f1 .I love my champ but I wanted to push out a few more watts and get a little more gain . I always love the sound of the late60s 7591 driven ampegs. I asked if he could changeout the 6v6 for a 7591 and upgrade OT. Others said it couldnt be done . James said it could . He said he might have to make a couple of changes but it could be done. He was always quick to respond to my email. I mailed my chasis to him and it was back in about 10 days .The amp sounds so great its scarry. I have some significant more volume ad that nice 7591 tone. Exactly what I wanted. No crackling or microphonic noise. Its been a couple of months now, and its still going strong. I really push this amp and Im not having any issues with heat, fuse or otherwise. The price was cheap and Im happy wih the service I got.

Thanks Omega.

James:

Just wanted to send you and update and more appreciation for the mod you did for my HRX.

I've now had a little time to really check this thing out using my two very different guitars (a homemade tele and an Ibanez artcore hollowbody) and with lots of different settings on my Digitech RP500. All I can say is "wow!

When I moved up to the stock HRX from solid state practice amps about seven years ago, it was a huge step, but my current HRX (with your mods, your recommended tube array and the Veteran 30 speaker) is even more of a revelation. It's like I've never really played a good amp before; I've never known what it's like to have that richness, that sustain at my disposal as a guitarist. No matter what I try---clean, drive, more drive, no effects, added effects, different guitars---I'm in love. It's not just that it "sounds better" --- that doesn't capture the difference. It's a completely playing experience!

And more importantly, I'm already playing better myself! Or at least I'm suddenly feeling much more confident in being able to execute the kinds of sounds I've been chasing for all these years. I think the dramatically increased (and very musical) sustain is a huge part of it. Knowing that the notes or chords are going to "keep singing" allows me to relax more and concentrate on fluidity and musical ideas. I've been toying for years with the idea of putting together a solo act using backing loops and stuff and now I feel I can actually do it. I don't have to fight the amp or keep bashing the guitar strings to keep the music going. It just flows and I in turn can flow with it.

I feel like I have just begun to explore what is possible. But it's nice to know that after all these years of searching and trying and modifying and rejecting equipment, that I've got the key piece in place. This will be the only amp I will need for the rest of my life and I've got a very joyful task ahead of me---living up to it and using it to the best of its ability!

Thanks again. You are a genius!

Jeff

Jim,

I played the amp all day yesterday. I couldn’t walk away from it. WOW, this thing is absolutely outrageous!!! I have been playing for 35 years and in that time owned every amp known to man and this Deville blows them all away. I am really looking forward to practicing with the band tonight. I’ll let you know their reaction.

I hope you took notes because I would like to have another one as a backup. Can you duplicate it?

Thanks a million!!!
Jam on

Jim!

Whats going on!...Ahh you would not imagine! Im like literally shaking man! Im like freaken blown away by this amp! I got to crank it today..mess with the different channels. But dang, you like totally nailed the tone iv been looking for so long! The clean channel sounds so improved, so much thicker and richer, depth, and more sustain. I was most blown away by what you have done to the drive channel. THe stock amp drive was muddy and flat...nothing special...just the tone in general just wasnt good. I tried the drive channel and more drive...I was like amazed! Sounds insanely good. Sounds better than my overdrive pedals. You really worked your magic with getting that tube sound at lower volumes, and the sustain of the drive channel is amazing. I actually went to guitar center today to try out some guitars..and tested them on some really expensive tube amps...which i didnt think sounded as good at your modified deville. Its been well worth it buddy! Thanks a Lot!
