What
are people saying about MODS??
So, My Hot Rod DeVille came in today, was waiting for me after class. I sent it to Jim Price at Omega Amps (www.omegaamps.com) not long ago. He did his standard mod (which, for all of you that have been following his mods, is a new circuit, mine is the third he's done now with the new circuit) plus the footswitchable mid boost.
So here's the break down by channel.
Clean- WOW! This channel is understated, I think by most. The more I hear it, the more I love it. Very Twin-ish. Fat, mellow, but has punchiness in reserve. It's a gorgeous tone, not as bright and harsh as the original channel. Honestly, after hearing this, I have realized, the original clean channel just wasn't as good as I initially thought. Jim really rounded this channel off. It has a great natural balance of what most look for in a clean channel: Fat, warm tone. FANTASTIC!!
Clean+MIDBOOST- All of the above with a big helping of boost! sends the clean into overdrive when the amp's close to pushing, if the clean channel were a softball, the MB clean channel is a bowling ball. If that makes ANY sense.
Yellow Drive(1st Drive Channel)- HOLY CRAP!!!! This is the most improved channel on this new circuit compared to his older ones, according to him, and the clips i've heard online. Just an amazing OD channel. Very full sounding, very rich. Smooth fat overdrive. Take a tubescreamer, make it better, rounder, and put it in your amp, haha! It gives a barky TS feel. It really is tough to put into words. But I can say it is my favorite channel!
Yellow Drive+ MIDBOOST- Like a punch in the face! You know those sounds that put lumps in your throat? THAT!! hopefully some of you know what i'm talking about. BROWN overdrive with a wonderful ability to cut through the mix. It's a TS-9, morbidly obese on steroids!!
Red Drive(2nd Drive Channel)- HELLO ROCK! take the yellow channel and overdrive it some more! Gives a Marshall Dumble lovechild feel. Very rich, but also growly at the same time!
Red Drive+ MIDBOOST- welcome to feedback HEAVEN! If your crowd were falling asleep on you, this would be the adrenaline rip to wake them up! the pure essence of ROCK!!!!
Guys, this is one GREAT sounding amp! I wish I had the ability to put some clips up. But I can say, for me, this puts the discussion of whether the mod is worth it or not to rest. Some say the amp just isn't worth modding, sell it and save up for a boutique amp. There just ins't anything that i've played on withing 1500 bucks of what i've spent on this thing that sounds as good, is as versatile, it's just THAT GOOD!
It's a tough amp to put into words without A/B'n it with similar amps. What i can truly say with confidence, is that this amp is worth 3 times what i paid for it in tone!!

What
are MODS??
Simply put, a modification
to your "TUBE" amplifier is done when YOU want more out of your
amp!! Basic designs are really good in most amplifiers. We have some cool
cook book stuff that will set YOU apart from the ordinary! From Hi Gain,
crunch, or more BLUES Tone, we can tailor a sound that meets or exceeds
your expectation. For Fender HOTROD DEVILLE and DELUXE owners, you will
be pleasantly surprised at the sound and performance of your amp once
we get done with it. All 3 channels perform and sound like amps that cost
much more.
The CLEAN
sound retains much of it's stock character, but is richer and fuller sounding.
The CRUNCH channel has more defined crunch with better tone. Lead channel
soars with natural sustained and harmonics galore! With a new sound, now
may be a good time to upgrade preamp and power tubes to maximize the tone
this circuit is capable of. We can take it even further with an upgraded
output transformer and speaker!!
Fender HOTROD Modification: preamp revoicing on "DRIVE" channel for fat
brown crunch, and a more "DRIVE" channel full of harmonics and SUSTAIN.
Awesome for rock and blues players! Clean retains Blackface character,
but is fuller sounding and richer.
PLEASE
NOTE: This modification is NOT going to make your
amp sound like a CRANKED 100 watt Marshall plexi. It
is NOT for HEAVEY METAL. It is a SOFTER sound based
LOOSLY on Hot-rodded fenders of old. Its GREAT for BLUES
and lighter rock and jazz fusion lead playing. Do NOT expect
the lead sound to be overly BRIGHT or HARD sounding. It is
more like a flute, or saxaphone, and is quite pleasing to
play. Think more Santana than Poison... The bottom end is
going to be a tad LOOSE thats where all the CHEWIE greasy
harmonics live.
If
you have questions PLEASE ask! Thank
you!
